What Is Myopia?

Myopia is commonly known as nearsightedness, it is a vision condition whereby objects nearby can be seen clearly, but objects further away appeared to be blurry. Children whom one or both parents are myopic, are more likely to be myopic as well. Nevertheless, myopia progression is also affected by individual’s visual usage (e.g. screen time).

Myopia first onsets in school-age children and typically progresses until about age 20. If left unnoticed or neglected, myopia may worsen and affect their visions. It may lead to higher chances of developing concerning eye diseases (e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration) in the long run.

Therefore, it is important to identify signs of myopia in children as early at the age of 3.
