Preschool Eye Screening: 3-6 Years Old

Do you know when should a kid get their first eye screening? Some might say as soon as there is any abnormality spotted from their eyesight. American Optometric Association suggests kids should get their eye tested as little as 3 years old and monitor on a yearly basis, to make sure their vision is developing properly.

Kids Fundamental Eye Tests

Visual Acuity Test

To test whether eyesight is good enough from a distance of 6 meters. If a child achieve 6/6 vision there is no need for wearing eyeglasses. However, this test is unable to tell whether they have squint eyes or eye muscle weakness.

Objective Refraction

Objective refraction is done by a machine called auto-refractor. Kids have to fixate their vision on a target, which is the all-too-well-known hot air balloon! Optometrists will capture their eyesight and the reading for shortsightedness, longsightedness, and astigmatism will be generated in no time.

However, objective refraction is just the preliminary screening. Eye power should be crossed checked with subjective refraction to avoid any discrepancy.

Retinoscope Screening

Retinoscope can check if a kid has pre-existing eye power. It is normally used when a kid could not perform visual acuity test and objective refraction with auto-ref machine. Reasons being some kids might be too small to recognise letters, numbers and shapes, and others might have shorter attention span to fixate their vision.

Colour Vision Test

Ishihara colour plates are used to study if there’s any colour deficiency in kids. Yes, these are the color plates adults will see in a car license test. You don’t have to wait until the age to drive only to find out you are less sensitive to certain colours.

3D Vision Test

Timus fly chart is used to study whether a kid can perceived depth and dimensions. A kid will put on a pair of 3D glasses and see a floating fly with its wings popping out. Optometrists will ask the kid to catch the wing with fingers. The kid shall not touch the wing in the chart, instead their fingers should be pinching in the air as if they’re catching the fly by its wing.
